Biloxi Wade-In 228 Day Fund Highlight

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s inaugural 228 Day campaign is an opportunity for the Mississippi Gulf Coast to support GCCF as it continues to champion charitable causes across South Mississippi. It’s also a celebration of the strength and resilience of our Coast and a time to reflect on the people and moments that have shaped the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Biloxi Beach Wade-Ins, a courageous fight for equality that unfolded on our very shores, are among those moments. The Biloxi Wade-In Memorial Fund, a fund of GCCF, is a powerful example of how the Foundation has put people’s passion into action since 1989.

A Legacy Remembered: The Biloxi Wade-In Memorial

Between 1959 and 1963, more than 182 brave individuals (many of them teenagers) took a stand for equality by participating in the Biloxi Beach Wade-Ins. Together, they challenged the segregation of public beaches, a bold action that paved the way for the freedoms enjoyed by all today.

Through the tireless efforts of Wade-In participant Clemon Perry Jimerson Sr., the Biloxi Wade-In Memorial is being brought to life through the Biloxi Wade-In Memorial Fund at GCCF. It is a tribute that will forever honor those who risked their lives and livelihoods for the right to share in the beauty of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

A Place of Reflection and Unity

Set to be placed on the beach across from the iconic Biloxi Lighthouse, the 45-foot-long curved memorial, crafted from granite and concrete, will feature a sloped walk that will gently guide visitors onto the same sands where Wade-In participants once stood. It will ensure accessibility for everyone, including those with mobility challenges. The space will also be a gathering place perfect for reflection, education and inspiration, and will include an area for speakers and events.

Making The Vision A Reality

Although there are markers honoring the Wade-Ins and organizer Dr. Gilbert R. Mason along the Coast, Mr. Jimerson said, “I felt the 182 individuals who risked their lives needed to honored as well.”

Dr. Christen H. Duhé, president and executive director of GCCF, said, “As we celebrate 228 Day this month, we’re reminded of the power of philanthropy to preserve history and create lasting change. The Biloxi Wade-In Memorial is a testament to that mission, and GCCF is proud to help bring this vision to life.”

This project has been made possible through the dedication of Mr. Jimerson and the expertise of David Perkes and the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, which has created a community-led design of the memorial. Supporters and contributors to this project include the Knight Foundation, which has donated $50,000 to the fund through the Knight Foundation Fund, a fund of GCCF; Gulf Coast National Heritage Area; Steps Coalition; City of Biloxi; East Biloxi Community Collaborative; Biloxi NAACP; Mississippi State University Gulf Coast Community Design Studio; and GCCF. A special thank you is offered to the National Parks Community Input Team and Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.
